Northern Arizona University (NAU) announced last week that its campus dining is partnering with USEFULL for plastic-free takeout on its campus.
NAU now offers USEFULL stainless steel takeout containers at the Lemon Grass Kitchen, Turnip the Greens and Cobrizo Mexican Grill dining locations on its Flagstaff campus, with plans to expand the program to other NAU dining options.
The first year is funded by NAU’s Green Fund and is part of campuswide sustainability efforts, including aiding Campus Dining in reaching the goals of NAU’s Climate Action Plan
NAU Campus Dining had previously offered a program with reusable plastic containers meant to reduce the need for single-use packaging, according to the announcement. It was noted that the previous program had high loss rates, as 87% of those containers were never returned.
“To address these loss rates and transition to a truly plastic-free takeout system, NAU has converted to USEFULL’s plastic-free reusable program,” it said.
The announcement also noted that NAU is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 40 tons in its first year of the program, and reduce waste by 12 tons.
Students interested in participating can download the USEFULL app to sign up, as it is integrated with NAU’s TouchNET campus card. They can then check out the reusable containers by scanning the QR code on the bottom. The app will measure individual’s impact through the use of these containers as well as maintaining a impact dashboard (which can be viewed online).
As of March 25, the dashboard showed NAU students had checked out 5,037 containers through the program, saving 467.5 pounds of trash, 13,090.9 gallons of water and 1,471 pounds of emissions.
USEFULL works on sustainability with campuses across the U.S. NAU is the first Arizona higher-education institution to implement its programs.
“We are excited to provide students and other NAU community members this opportunity to take action toward reducing waste by simply dining at these popular restaurants, checking out the reusable containers, and returning them when they are done,” NAU Campus Dining Marketing Director William Brandt said in the announcement.
